single-mode—supporting only one mode per polarization direction for
a given wavelength—there are specific physical limitations on the
coupler's performance. Notably, combining two or more inputs of the
same optical frequency into a single-polarization output can result
in significant excess losses. However, these restrictions do not
apply when using different input wavelengths. Certain couplers can
effectively combine inputs at different wavelengths into one output
with minimal losses. In this context, a fiber optic adapter is
employed.
